OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM
LORD MACAULAY’S ADDRESS TO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT, 2nd FEBRUARY, 1835
“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.”
Look at us, what we are; a group of people who has lost their self esteem, their native culture, and religion and has become the truly subjugated nation. Even after knowing this, we may feel sad, but we will not do a single thing to change our way of life. It is a process of three stages. Firstly we start admiring, secondly, we want to have resemblance and finally, we stop thinking and we are at the third stage.
They could’ve changed our thoughts only from our education and they have done it. Now what ever is right for them, it is right for us too.
Unfortunately, we do not have any place, where we can see a practicing Muslim nation, where Allah’s laws are implemented, where buying and selling is done without Riba, and where we can have truly Islamic education. We see a system, where non Muslims are in control and they are living a better life than us, we think, if we want to get success we should follow them. But Allah says in Quran:
“43:33. And were it not that (all) men might become of one (evil) way of life, We would provide, for everyone that blasphemes against (Allah) Most Gracious, silver roofs for their houses and (silver) stair-ways on which to go up,
43:34. And (silver) doors to their houses, and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline,
43:35. And also adornments of gold. But all this were nothing but conveniences of the present life: The Hereafter, in the sight of thy Lord is for the Righteous. “
If we see our education system, it also teaches us to learn and earn to find success here only and not here after. There is nothing wrong living a good life or a learn something to earn halal. Yet, it will be an evil act to only learn just to earn by any means.
In our current education system, we have more emphasis on how to look good rather to be good. People’s perception is more important than reality. Marks are more important than real knowledge. Our success becomes hurdle for us to be humble, respectful, and a good human being. It teaches us to increase our importance that makes us more self centered, arrogant and greedy. Under this approach, we become more result oriented for every thing. The worst part of this behavior is that it did not even give us satisfaction here; since, we can only get, what we supposed to get; though, it increases anguish and greed that make us live a miserable life.
On the other hand, in Islamic education system, we learn to give importance to others. We learn that results are from Allah (S.W.T) and we can only do our best. Due to this approach, we never feel jealous with anyone; since, reward is from Allah (S.W.T.). In fact, it increases respect for our rewarded brother/sister and successful person do not act arrogantly; since, it is from Allah (S.W.T.).
How can we turn the table around? Next time we will discuss strategy and solutions for our problems InshaAllah.
May Allah Guide Us!
